The School of Medicine employs individuals who are responsible for coding medical charts, reviewing medical records, auditing patient charts, and submitting utilization review findings to appropriate physicians and medical staff. Employees in these positions usually have advanced degrees and are extremely proficient with medical terminology and medical coding. Some positions involve reviewing patient charts on inpatient floors of Barnes-Jewish and Children's Hospitals, auditing medical charts from clinic locations throughout the Medical Center and/or investigating medical coding on incomplete charts by contacting the appropriate individuals.

ASSISTANT ADMINISTRATOR OF HEALTH INFORMATION Job # 061175: The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking an Assistant Administrator of Health Information. Position is responsible for directing and coordinating the department's clinical record activities and managing medical record and transcription personnel. Provides quality health information by ensuring that records are in accordance with regulatory requirements and department policy. Advocate for patient confidentiality. Enforces the department's compliance plan. Performs release of information and directs the collection of record release fees. Serves in the capacity of the manager when instructed, or in absence of the manager. Normal clinical office environment. Travels to numerous satellite offices. Work demands ability to handle fluctuating levels of pressure and stress. Must have knowledge in health information management, medical terminology, ICD-9CM, CPT-4 and HCPCS coding. Ability to work with a high degree of independence, with attention to detail. Requires excellent interpersonal/communication skills. Bachelor's in health information management., or related field. Required certification as Registered Health Information Administrator. Certified Coding Specialists-physician practice; previous experience in Doctors office coding/outpatient records preferred.

CODER, CERTIFIED Job # 061277: The Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking a Certified Coder. This position reviews medical record documentation to determine appropriate billing codes, required documentation and correct charge posting. Other duties include analyzing assigned coding upon claim denials or low payment flagging claims for payment appeals process, meets with physician to review documentation and signature of all unsigned dates of service and identifies trends by payer for policy review and by location or procedure code for revision of billing policy. Normal office environment with handling of case files and medical records documentation per HIPPA requirements. Working knowledge of medical terminology and related computer systems. Knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding required. Equivalent of Associate's degree and 2+ years in coding or medical record review. Certification as CPC.

COORDINATOR: MEDICAL CODING Job # 061071: The Department of Surgery is seeking a Coordinator: Medical Coding. Accurately and efficiently assigns CPT-4 and ICD-9 codes, captures, and bills, surgical and hospital-based services provided by assigned departmental faculty. Maximizes reimbursements potential through direct interaction with surgeons, support staff and acts as liaison with outside entities. Reviews and monitors charges entered for department on a monthly basis, and investigate and resolve issues with billing and reimbursement. The coder must maintain high quality communication with hospital medical records departments as well as other functional areas of billing. Effective oral/written communication, independent judgement and decision making, service-oriented manner, well-developed sense of prioritizing, know medical terminology specifically CPT-4, ICD-9-CM, and federal/state guidelines. Degree in medical record technology or health information management plus training or experience in related area. Professional certification on medical/surgical coding plus three years or more of direct coding experience. Great working environment!
