Confidentiality

Washington University School of Medicine maintains confidential records for a variety of business needs. Records include detailed information about patients receiving treatment, job applicants, employees, finances and future planning. The university will comply with laws and regulations that govern the handling of protected health information. Maintaining this confidentiality is important to our competitive position in the industry and ultimately to our ability to achieve financial success and provide employment stability. The medical school will comply with laws and regulations that govern the handling of patient-related information. Employees are expected to protect this information by safeguarding it when in use, filing it properly when not in use,
discussing it only with those who have a legitimate business need to know and ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations through appropriate training. Violations of this policy will lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination.
